For 15 years, Amanda Musser has led the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra's Junior String Orchestra (JSO) - inspiring not only excellence, but confidence, community, and a lifelong love of music. As she steps down in retirement, we celebrate her remarkable impact and the legacy of excellence she leaves at FWYO.

A Career Rooted in Teaching and Mentorship

Mrs. Musser began her journey at Texas Christian University (TCU), graduating in 1975, then spent an incredible 34 years at Bailey Junior High in Arlington. Under her leadership, the orchestra was named the Texas Music Educators Association Honor Orchestra in 1995 and performed in Washington, D.C. in 1997. She mentored more than 30 student teachers - many from TCU - who now lead programs all across Texas. She retired from teaching public school in 2009. Even “retired,” Amanda returned to TCU as Adjunct Professor of Music Education, supervised student teachers, and mentored orchestra directors in Fort Worth and Arlington ISDs.

Mrs. Musser joined FWYO shortly after her first "retirement," when she joined our artistic staff in 2010 as conductor of the JSO. While she enjoyed teaching at TCU, Mrs. Musser says she desperately missed having an orchestra of her own. When FWYO called, she was thrilled to step back onto the podium.

"There was a huge hole in my life. FWYO's group of motivated students filled the void immediately. These past 15 years with JSO, teaching entire families of kids, has been a tremendous blessing in my life." - Amanda Musser

FWYO's Standard of Excellence, Through Her Eyes

FWYO has thrived for six decades by bringing in top conductors who combine artistry, pedagogy, and heart. Mrs. Musser embodied that standard - and raised it. More than 60% of Mrs. Musser's JSO students this year came from homeschool or private-school backgrounds, and many more from public schools lacking orchestra programs. She was there to fill the void and teach our youngest strings how to listen, collaborate, and pursue excellence, setting them up to advance through our ensembles all the way to our premier Youth Orchestra.

Dr. Germán Gutiérrez, FWYO Music Director and conductor of the Youth Orchestra, says Mrs. Musser was the ideal teacher and conductor to guide our students as they prepared to advance into the upper ensembles. He shares, "I am deeply grateful for her time with us."

"Amanda has a true gift for connecting with young musicians during their most formative years. She teaches them how to listen, how to collaborate, and how to truly love music. Her influence will be felt for generations to come." - Dr. Germán Gutiérrez

Mrs. Musser's expert instruction has shaped generations of young musicians, including Isabel Opat, who first auditioned for JSO at just six years old and eventually served as concertmaster of our premier Youth Orchestra for two years before graduating in 2025.

Celebrating and Carrying Forward Her Legacy

At FWYO's Finale Concert on May 4, 2025, Mrs. Musser conducted her last piece. While she'll be dearly missed at the podium, her influence lives on in every student who learned from her, every future music educator she mentored, and in the very culture of excellence she helped build at FWYO.

About FWYO:

Celebrating 60 years of extraordinary music education during the 2024-2025 season, the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra has won local, national, and international recognition as one of the finest youth orchestra programs in the United States. Through ten programs - including four major orchestras, two wind ensembles, a jazz band, Early Childhood Music, FWYO Suzuki School, and chamber programs - the FWYO delivers high quality musical instruction to nearly 500 students ranging in age from four to eighteen years, and represents communities throughout North Texas.

Founded by a community group headed by Betty Utter and under the direction of conductors Ezra Rachlin and John Giordano, the FWYO was founded to promote and inspire the continuing development of musical talent in qualified area youth through intensive education in classical orchestral rooted music and performance. The programs offers students the opportunity to further develop their talent as well as their leadership skills, self-discipline, confidence, and pride in personal achievement. Many of the nearly 20,000 alumni of the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra program have gone on to become members of major symphony orchestras, music educators, or leaders in their fields.

The Orchestra's accomplishments include international concert tours in Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the Far East; music festivals in Switzerland and Washington, D.C.; and numerous other concert appearances across Texas and the Southwest. Its most recent tour in 2024 was to Spain with performances in Barcelona, Valencia, and Cullera. The Youth Orchestra has also been honored to perform with artists such as Van Cliburn, Jose Feghali, Yakov Kasman, Tamàs Ungàr, and John Owings, and composers Morton Gould and Samuel Adler. In 2021, the FWYO also received 2nd in the Youth Orchestra Division of the prestigious American Prize and 3rd place in the 2024 American Prize. The Wind Ensemble also won 1st place in the American Prize Youth Band division in 2024.

Under the leadership of Music Director Dr. Germán Gutiérrez since 2000 and Executive Director Andrew Reynolds since 2021, the FWYO has become one of North Texas’ most prestigious performing arts organizations. In addition to its educational programs, the FWYO owns and operates historic Orchestra Hall in Foster Park that has been home to numerous performing arts organizations since 1975.
